Apurímac Cañón - MACHU PICCHU Medical OPTOMETRIC Dental MISSION, Peru

On this project we will return to poor communities located in the Apurímac Valley facing the Cordillera Vilcabamba mountain range, opposite the sacred ruins of Choquechirao, and just south of the lost citadel, Machu Picchu. The week-long campaign involves 3 clinic days in 2 rural communities, delivering medical and dental care in collaboration with local medical centers and an orphanage.

The inhabitants of these villages lack resources and options for meeting their ever-important health needs, allowing illnesses to go untreated. We are seeking physicians, dentists, optometrists, ophthalmologists, PAs, NPs, nurses, PTs, translators and other medical and professionals to help run free clinics and public health campaigns for all. Although diagnoses and treatments will only be provided by qualified professionals, a medical background is not required to participate. Non-medical and/or student support is greatly needed and encouraged. 

This 7-day trip involves no camping and is at medium altitude with initial nights spent around 9,000’. There is time set aside for you to visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Machu Picchu and Cuzco, as well as a free day to rest, explore or go hiking or horseback riding in the stunning scenery around you. The medical centers are all arrived to via bus.

To participate on this trip, it is important to apply early (up to a year in advance), and you will be required to raise, or pay on your own, a minimum donation. We will provide you with materials for raising these funds on a crowd-funding website. The donation covers most land travel costs and shared lodging once you arrive in Cuzco, Peru. It also covers all meals, transport, horse and burro support, camping costs and fees associated with our campaign. It does not cover overseas flights to Peru, some meals in town, optional side-trips, or other miscellaneous expenses.
