TRIP FULL - Cordillera Vilcabamba Medical Dental EXPEDITION, Peru

AUGUST 4 - 15, 2018

This will be a demanding expedition, requiring top physical condition to reach remote communities along an uncommon route stretching across the cloud forests of the Cordillera Vilcabamba, passing through the sacred "sister" ruins of Choquechirao and and arriving at the lost citadel, Machu Picchu. The expedition involves 8 days to visit 4 rural communities (off the more touristed Inca trail) delivering medical and dental care.

The inhabitants of these villages lack resources and options for meeting their ever-important health needs, allowing illnesses to go untreated. We are seeking doctors, dentists, optometrists, nurses and other medical professionals to help run free clinics for all. Although diagnoses and treatments will only be provided by qualified professionals, a medical background is not required to participate. Non-medical and/or student support is greatly needed and encouraged.

This trip is equally demanding as our Cordillera Huayhuash expedition, but at lower altitude. We will cross over high passes (one ~15,000') with steep and rocky terrain, but more time will be spent at the lower elevation, spending our nights in scenic camps and remote villages and trekking through highland forests between 7,000 and 12,000 feet.

You must be qualified for this trip physically, being prepared for hiking 4-8 hours per day, varying mountain weather conditions, strenuous passes, and full-time camping. It is recommended that you have experience at altitude and have proper immunizations for the Peruvian Andes taken care of in advance.

To participate on this trip, you will be required to raise, or pay on your own, a minimum donation of $2995.  We will provide you with materials for raising these funds on a crowd-funding website. The donation covers most land travel costs and shared lodging once you arrive in Cuzco, Peru. It also covers all meals, transport, horse and burro support, camping costs and fees associated with our trek. It does not cover overseas flights to Peru, some meals in town, optional side-trips, tips to your guides, or other miscellaneous expenses.

Due to the demands of the trip, all applicants must first schedule a conversation with the team leader before applying.  You may schedule a call by clicking request info below.
