Pisco Earthquake Recovery

Dates: Ongoing
Seeking Volunteers

MMI continues help with the reconstruction efforts in Peru after the earthquake that destroyed nearly 60,000 buildings and damaged another 20,000. Although the town of Pisco was hardest hit, many neighboring villages such as Caucato, San Clemente, Caņete and Chincha have been suffering more. These Peruvians are more impoverished than one can imagine, spending more than 60% of their incomes on food alone, on less than 120 US dollars per month and many now living outside or in tents. Many also live a communal lifestyle, sharing their cotton and cane fields to make a living for themselves and their neighbors.

Many people, especially in the outskirts, receive little aid, often siting that they are unable to receive government assistance (e.g. food, water, shelter) because they lack land/property titles, an expensive, bureaucratic process. NGOs such as the Red Cross, Oxfam, and the Salvation Army have filled in some of the gap, providing immediate needs such as food, water, and tents. However, there are thousands of people that have obviously been left behind.

MMI has been distributing food and supplies to those most in need, most recently delivering food to community pots (ollas) in Caucato and San Clemente. Now we are supporting demolition and construction efforts of shelters, homes, and school buildings with BWB and Pisco Sin Fronteras, hosting volunteers to do a variety of labor on site.

If you are looking for a challenge, can work with tools, translate spanish, or offer some other skill and would like to volunteer to work in Pisco or the surrounding area, please contact us and we can steer you on site and helping with reconstruction efforts.

A special thanks to the kids, parents and teachers at Lynch View Elementary for raising funds for Pisco in a coin drive based in Portland, OR.

These funds are going to a special "Adopt a Cornerstone" partner project with Burners Without Borders, to build a concrete home cornerstone, toilet/sink/shower unit.

Muchas gracias to these kids making a difference!
